Displays that exploit the visual potential of time

Final display:

General Description:

With this display, I am trying to convey an idea to my audience that this section of the infographic is about the changes UW Night Market has each year, not only with bigger places but also with larger audiences and more food vendors. With a food icon changing its size every year, I hope it can represents that the Night Market has grown larger with more food and more attendees as year goes by, which results in the moving location, expressed by the text nearby the food icons. I started with two versions, where the second version got more votes from peers. Then applying the feedbacks from people, I chanhe my circle into food icons in order to be more vivid.

Emulation Description:

I did emulated this section of infographic from my color, visual language and typographic models. Changing from circle to food icons, I tried to emulate from the icons in my visual language models, which has more pictures, instead of simple circles. Also, I alternated the colors each year by following my color models to create a difference between each year.

Sources: The data/inspiration for this display came from the following sources...

First Iteration

version 1

version 2

Second Iteration

revision 1

revision 2

First Iteration

Critique #1: Jessie Zhang

Jessie liked the 2nd version better but she pointed out that it depends on how I want to format my infographics.

Version 1:

She liked that this vedrsion is very clear, especially the different gaps between each year.

She suggested me to make the year lables bigger to have more impact. visuual pleasing & color is clear to you

Version 2

Jessie assume the increasing fit line means how man people attending each year, which is what I meant to do here.

Since I expressed some overlapping information about numbers of attendees each year, she suggested me to combine the time line & attendance together somehow.

Also she pointed out that I should make the year lables bigger.

Model Emulation Feedback

When I showed her my models, she thought my displays emulate well with the flat design in my model. She liked the colors comparing with the dark background.

Revisions based on this critique

Based on Jessie's feedbacks, I made the cirlce bigger and also make the label larger.

Critique #2: Derry Cheng

Derry liked version 2 better.

Also he likes my color displays.

Version 2:

Derry pointed out that it's a different background color than version 1, which means that I emulate a wrong background color when editing.

Also, he pointed out that version 2 seems like a two dimensional time display, which is a littel confused to him as I didn't point out what the y axis mean. He suggested me to add some numberic values

if I also want to demonstrate numbers of people attendees.

Version 1:

He liked how this version is very simple and one dimension.

He pointed out that I should add the title of this time display otherwise people won't know what it represents.

He also saw some alignment issues, which I need to fix later in my second iteration

Model Emulation Feedback

When I showed him my models, he thought my displays emulate well the flat design in my model.

He pointed out that all the colors are good, not confusing but he believed they are consistant enough for him to know that they represents different years.

And it's a great color combination and the font fits well with my Night Market theme.

Revisions based on this critique

I changed my background color to the same background color with my color model. Also, I didn't pointed out the second dimension - numbers of people each year, as I don't want to confuse people with similar information with my second number display.

Second Iteration

Critique #1:Christopher Leatham

Chris pointed out that I should change another visual language model that shows a combination of all of my numbers and time displays, which also makes the texture feel better.

Also, when talking about the different importance of time display, he suggested me to use same food icons for one category of event during that year and either another kind of food icon or a smaller food icon for another less important years.

Model Emulation Feedback

When I showed her my models, he thought my displays did not emulate the flat design in my model and he suggested me to change to another visual language model.

In order to emulate well with my visual language, Chris also suggested me to increasing the size of my food icon for those 4 big circles and keep the same size for those two smaller circles when using another kind of food icon to represent it.

Revisions based on this critique

Based on his suggestion, I changed my bisual language model and also I replaced my circle with food icon, which makes it easier for people to see. Also I made my food icon into 4 different sizes, indicating the scale of UW Night Market each year.

Critique #2: Yiqing Zhao

She likes the emphasis of those large circles, as they show the change of location in those year.

Yiqing suggested me to make the year labels larger in order to be more obvious.

She also pointed out that instead of using circles, putting some iconic images would be a better representation of Night Market theme.

Model Emulation Feedback

She agreed with Chris to change my visual language model to the new one.

Revisions based on this critique

i made my year lables and my words bigger, so that it will be easier for people to see.

Also, instead of putting image into my circle, I change my circle to food icon, as it follows my visual language better.

Critique #3: Yuqing Zhao

Yuqing was confused by colors, because she thought there was correlations between each similar colors. So she suggested me to change them to one color or in a specific patterns, so audiences can have a clue of what's going on.

She liked the 2nd version better

Version 1

Yuqing pointed out that the 1st version is too simple and needs to add more stuff into it.

Also she suggested me to add all years into my timeline if we have Night Market every year, so people won't get confused by those gaps between different years.

Version 2

Yuqing suggested me to add cirle for each year, where for some important year I can use big circle with image inside and description or fact out side, and for normal years I can use small cirlcles with not emphasis.

Model Emulation Feedback

She thought I emulated my display well with my color mode and she really liked it.

But when talking about visual language model, she's not sure if I should follow everything in my visual language, instead of only use my appearance to follow the most important visual language in the model, because except for my apperance, I don't emulate all of my other displays with my visual language.

Revisions based on this critique

I switched the green color and yellow color, which all the big circles are represented by different colors, while there's only little repetition on one small circle. Also I didn't add all the years into my Time display, as I think it will breaks my simplicity of my infographics. I want my infographics to be as simple as possible, as there are already so many color displays.

Critique #3: Hamzah ALy

Hamzah couldn't figure out why I have different circles to represent different year. At frist he thought those larger cirlce represented milestones, but when he saw the year 2015, which is the break of record of attendance, which he also thouth that was a milestone but i didn't emphasize that. He then got confused about the differene between large and small circles.

After my explanation, he suggested me to highlight the text of location in a different and obvious color, so that audiences can notice first even before they read the facts of each year.

Hamzah said he had no issues with two dimision problem, because I did show a different slope of my line to show the different increasing of each year, which to him, seems like the increasing numbers of attendences.

Model Emulation Feedback

Overall, he believed my color model is good emulated and also the title is large and obvious enough.

Revisions based on this critique

I made the fonts of those years that include location larger, so that people know those are my emphasis.
