Displays that exploit the visual potential of appearance

Final display:

General Description:

With this fina display, I'm trying to communicate to my audience that this section of the infographic is used to give a general representation of UW Night Market. As the mascot of UW Night Market, the bubble tea costume called 'Bobo" represents UW Night Market. I started with a general sketch of the bubble tea and then, I applied more colors to make it looks more close to the normal bubble tea in people's impression, latter I added it's eyes and mouth in order to make it more vivid. All these improvement and changes are made to ensure that it would be recognizable by people as both the bubble tea and the representation of UW Night Market.

Emulation Description:

Followed by my visual language and color modesl, I tried to draw a very cartoonic apperance with vivide color displays in order to attract the attention of my audiences.

First Iteration

Critique #1: Yiqing Zhao

Yiqing definitely pointed out that my icons are not clear when clicking for a larger image demonstration, as I didn't color my icons backgrounds.

Also she prefers the 1st version, because it's closer to my visual language model and fit in the cute Night Market theme I'm going to focus on.

Model Emulation Feedback

When I showed her my model, Yiqing pointed out that the background color of my color model is a little dark but the color mode I chose in general is great, because my theme is full of different kinds of objects, so it would be nice to have multiple color options.

Also, she said the visual language choice is fine, but I have to pay attention on how to make the color of my infographics matches with the color style of the sketch in my visual language.

Revisions based on this critique

Based on Yiqing's advice, I added on the background color of my bobo, which make the icon easily to be seen my audiences.

I also slightly adjust the background color a little lighter to match the food these I'm going to work on in my infogrpahics.

Critique #2: Jessie Zhang

Jessie pointed out that the ico is a bubble tea (bobo), but she was not sure about the general these I'm going to have in my infographics.

She also prefered the 1st version, because she liked how the line style changes from thick to thin and also switches back and forth. But she also gave me suggestion that I can also do a gradient color when outlining my bobo.

Model Emulation Feedback

When I showed her my models, she suggested me to put some more color into the bobo so it would more lively.

Revisions based on this critique

I completely redid the drink layer on top of my bobo cup and added more colors into the bobo.

Second Iteration

Critique #1: Caleb Thorsteinson

After I showed Caleb my icons, he thought it was very cute.

Model Emulation Feedback

He pointed out that my icon's color fit my color model, but I need more colors in my icon so it would seem more vivid.

Also, he pointed out that my visual language matched the stroke presented in my visual language model, but I should also make the texture of my outline more clear.

Revisions based on this critique

I changed the style of bruch when depicting the outline of my boba, which looks more like the texture in my visual langague than previous version.

Critique #2: Joe Pollock

Joe pointed out that the icon is cute and matched with the food theme color.

But he pointed out that the putting a bubble tea in the middle of my infographics would not be a perfect match for UW Night Market theme, as it is not only a way to eat different kind of food, but also a way to promote Asian culture. So changing the bobo to a lantern would also be a good fit.

Model Emulation Feedback

When I showed him my models, he said mine icon mathced with my color model and also the visual language.

Revisions based on this critique

I didn't change the appearance to lantern, because I want my appearance to be icnoic. I hope it can be a figure that whenever people see it, it can remind them of UW Night Market.

Critique #3: Michael Dang

Michael prefers the 2nd version, and he pointed out that the 1st version is not symetric, and  seeing it from a further places, it doesn't seem aesthetic pleasing.

Also, when using the dark color, Michael suggeted me to change the color of my outline to grey or white, which shows audiences clearly that it is a plastic cup in a dark brown color background.

Model Emulation Feedback

When I showed him my models, he liked the color choices I had for my various food displays. However, he pointed out that the color model is more for a classy tone that used a lot for movies. So I have to think carefully when applying those colors.

Revisions based on this critique

I changed my bobo's outline to grey / white color while still keep the tapioca insie dark, which are good matching colors for the bubble tea in real life.

Critique #3: Shijir Tsogoo

Shijir said it looks cute.

But he also pointed out that UW Night Market is not only about food, but also about culture, entertainment and performances. So he suggested me to draw a bobo who is singing.

Model Emulation Feedback

When I showed him my models, he thought my color aligned perfectly with my color model and visual language is good.

Revisions based on this critique

I didn't add more on the bobo, as I want this apperance to be as simple as possible, especially in Night Market where there are already too much things going on. If adding more features, it would be a little chaotic.
